Wimbledon 2011

For all of us living and working in performance tennis in the UK this is the manic time of year....grass court season with the 'Big Daddy' of all tournaments about to begin. So who will it be? Which one of the top 4 men will lift the trophy. My instinct says Djokovic, my heart Murray, my sentiment Federer and my common sense Nadal. What a great tournament as every one of the four has good reason to be confident so we are in for a treat. In my view there is no other player in it to upset this quad.

The women....let's have a seance followed by a fortune teller and then let's take a lottery ticket. I will hazard a guess and say Sharapova. Why? Done it before and winning Rome with a semis in Paris gives her her Mojo back. She is a great competitor and can beat either Williams when fit and on form. Its been a while for her and the fire still burns bright. Expect Schiavone to be tough as both players I've seen practicing at Aurangi last week and the work was very good. Venus and Serena will be slightly enigmatic, not quite sure of form or how much fear remains of them but expect at least one to be thereabouts. Wozniacki has a strange schedule and too many pre-major tournaments, such as Copenhagen on clay last week. Zvonereva and Azerenko keep threatening as well but can't finish the job! Na Li is so sound and having won the French, if not mentally gone is my dark horse.

...And the winner all round is tennis, a truly global reaching sport that is as exciting at the top of the men's game as it has ever been, with the women waiting for a someone to separate from the pack given the long absences of V and S Williams.

TEAMBATH-MCTA had a good build up to Wimbledon with Sam Murray qualifying in Nottingham and playing her first main draw tour event in Birmingham, putting in credible performances in all matches win or lose. She secured her spot in the Wimbledon qualifying event via the GB wildcard playoffs in style. Perhaps mentally a bit tired but both in singles and doubles the outstanding form she had coming in deserted her and she lost her singles followed by the doubles where she served for the match. However the future is still extremely bright. We now will see how Toby Martin fares in the juniors. Lisa Whybourn unfortunately is injured so misses the tournament.
